The government of Alberta is investing $1.5 million to establish Alberta Bureau for International Education (ABIE) – a new non-profit organization for international education. The ABIE will showcase the strength of its post-secondary education system to talented students from around the world. It will also increase international learning opportunities for Alberta learners.
The Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) will establish ABIE as an independent non-profit organization with representation from post-secondary institutions and industry stakeholders. To plan and develop this initiative, the SAIT was funded with $500,000 this year. The Minister of Advanced Education, Demetrios Nicolaides has mentioned that universities already attract many international students, but ABIE will work to promote the quality and diversity of higher education in Alberta’s post-secondary institutions. The province’s polytechnic institutions and colleges will be included in the initiative.
The SAIT is set to engage with publicly funded post-secondary institutions, finalize a funding model, and ensure acceptance with all provincial and federal legislation. The president of Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, David Ross stated that SAIT hopes to work with the Government of Alberta to promote the province as a first-choice education destination for international students. SAIT aims to boost the global competitiveness of Alberta and help bring vital academic, economic, and social benefits to the province. With a keen interest for international education, Alberta’s post-secondary institutions create stronger international ties.
The International Education Strategy was announced by Alberta’s government in June 2020. The strategy aims to support universities and colleges in their efforts to attract more qualified foreign students to the province. International students and researchers contribute to Alberta’s academic, cultural, and economic prosperity.
