How to get a Canadian passport?

First, become a Canadian citizen

To get a Canadian passport, you need to be a citizen of Canada. Non-citizens can obtain citizenship by obtaining permanent residency and meeting minimum residency obligation requirements. If you are a permanent resident of Canada and are planning to apply for Canadian citizenship, depending on your age, you may have to pass the citizenship test. A Canadian permanent resident may apply for Canadian citizenship, provided he or she meets all the citizenship criteria.

If you are a child of a Canadian citizen, you may inherit their citizenship. New regulations extend this eligibility to some foreign-born Canadians' offspring. To apply for Canadian citizenship, immigrants must meet additional conditions after obtaining permanent residency and fulfilling the physical presence requirements. These include tax filing, passing the citizenship test, and demonstrating language proficiency in English and/or French at the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level 4, etc.

Getting your Canadian passport

New citizens can apply for a passport after participating in a citizenship ceremony and receiving a citizenship certificate. Eligible Canadian citizens may be disqualified for criminal records, misrepresentation on their citizenship application, security concerns, human rights violations, or ties to organized crime.

You need to provide Canadian citizenship evidence, two passport recommendations, proof of ID, two photos, and a guarantor for your first application. You can apply online, by appointment, or in person at Service Canada.

A Strong Passport Historically

According to Henley's rankings, Canadian passport holders have consistently benefited from its high rankings. The Canadian passport previously ranked as high as second worldwide in 2014 and has consistently been among the top 10 in Henley's passport rankings for nearly 20 years.
